Quick facts of demo submissions
- Deadline for submissions: May 2, 2018 (5:00pm, PDT).
- Online submission: Precision Conference System.
- Notification: June 15, 2018.
- Camera-ready deadline: September 26, 2018.
- Submission format: 2–4 pages including references in the SIGCHI Extended Abstracts Format (2018).
- ACM classification keywords: Use the ACM Computing Classification System (1998).
- At the conference: Demos will be presented at the conference (more info will follow).
- Archiving: The Extended Abstracts will be available in the ACM Digital Library.
In line with the theme of this year’s conference: revisiting the life cycle, we are looking for demos that will demonstrate and question the roles of digital artifacts and systems in different parts of the life cycle. We particularly encourage demos that question what HCI is and what it can be.
We especially encourage interactive demos that focus on communicating material knowledge and challenge the visitors in a non-verbal form by:
- questioning the way HCI allow us to interact with / through future, contemporary / obsolete objects, systems and services
- representing different modes of interaction
- raising critical issues (societal, economical and ecological) to the HCI-community related to tangibles, wearables, IoT, big data, AI, autonomous artifacts …
- permeating the socio-technical structures of the conference by challenging and changing the communication and discussion among participants, building on existing infrastructure
- growing and connecting multiple people and multiple technologies in an emergent and distributed manner
- new and potential technologies that will have a profound impact on the way we use or design with them
The call is open to all disciplines not only to the HCI-community. You are welcome to submit no matter if within performance, engineering, fashion design, architecture, game design, sound design etc. The demos can be actions, apps, software hacks, and objects, high-tech or low-tech. We especially would like to encourage graduate students and phd students to submit.
This track allows “demoers” to engage with the NordiCHI conference participants, a varied set of programmers, researchers, engineers, designers and artists that share an interest in the impact of computing in everyday life, design and fabrication, and performing arts. Think about the three days of the conference as a playground, opening up the possibility to contribute, intervene, raise questions or change the community.
Demo Cases submission content:
Submissions must include 1) a max 4 pages written article; 2) a description of the demo including what it consists of, how it will be staged (script), what the authors want to communicate (goal), its expected impact, requirements for setting it up (space, infrastructure, timing, …), and 3) a video presentation of it.
Demos will be juried, so authors should not expect in-depth reviews, and the submissions do not have to be anonymous. The extended abstracts (point 1 above) of accepted demos will be included in the conference proceedings of NordiCHI 2018 and will be archived in the ACM Digital Library. The video material (3) will not be displayed at the conference but it will be published as source material in the ACM Digital Library if not clearly stated in the description (2) that it should not. The description (2) is just a submission documentation and will not be displayed anywhere.
