Demos & installations

Call for participation

NordiCHI2020 welcomes researchers, industry, art and design practitioners to submit their work to the Demos & Installations track. The track invites interactive art and design installations, interface or system demonstrations, tangible prototypes and other interactive experiences that critically or creatively explore the conference themes and provoke discussions around novel technologies.

This year we have two types of submissions for the track - installations and demos. Installations are complex exhibits that require particular space, equipment or lighting conditions. Demonstrations are for self-contained exhibits with logistically simple requirements.

The track is open to all exploratory, provocative, innovative and ambitious contributions from industry, research, startups, maker communities, the arts, and design. If you have an interesting prototype, device, system, exhibit or installation, we want to know about it. Nordichi 2020 conference is a perfect venue for demonstrating your work to the community and beyond!

Update: the March 9th deadline for installation proposals was extended. New deadline for both submission types is May 11th.

Submission Format

Please note that ACM has recently modified its Publication Workflow and Article Templates for the submission and publication process (see https://www.acm.org/publications/taps/word-template-workflow). Authors must write and submit their papers using the single-column "Review Submission Format".

Please refer to the Instructions for Authors for detailed guidance on the selection of the correct templates, preparation of your manuscript for review and publishing the final version of your paper.

Submissions must have the following components:

Paper
The length of the paper should be up to 4 pages in single-column format, excluding references. It should be self-contained and clearly describe the novelty and distinguishing ideas of your project, even for readers who are not able to view the related demonstration at the conference or associated videos. Your abstract should include:

• A description of the system, installation or exhibit and the problem it addresses. Where relevant, discuss the broader context and questions that your work promotes reflection upon.
• A description of the relevance of the work to the immediate conference community, as well as to the broader HCI community, emphasising its novelty, uniqueness, and rationale.

Image
You are required to upload a still image of at least 1500 x 1200 px that represents your work. The authors should own the copyright for the image. It will be used for dissemination purposes to increase the visibility of the accepted demos and installations and it will be included in the ACM digital library after the conference.

Video
The video should summarize the content of the extended abstract. Submitting a video is optional, but highly encouraged, as it will increase the visibility of your demonstration before, at the conference, and in the ACM digital library in perpetuity.
Please make sure that your video is playable on standard PC and Macintosh video players. We recommend that you encode your video as an MP4 using the H.264 codec. Be sure to have permission for all content, and use rights-free music tracks.

All materials (extended abstract pdf, still image, supplement pdf and video) must be submitted through the submission system and the total size of the submission cannot exceed 100 MB.

Submissions should not contain sensitive, private, or proprietary information that cannot be disclosed at publication time. Submissions should NOT be anonymous. However, the confidentiality of submissions will be maintained during the selection process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity.

Supplement
A supplement is mandatory for all submissions and describes technical set-up and space requirements. This supplement is useful for describing anything that does not fit or is not appropriate for the extended abstract and is used to determine how to organise Demonstrations and Installations. Supplement materials are for the purpose of review and planning only and will not be published. This information is used to determine spatial, technical, lighting, power (etc.) requirements. The supplement should be no longer than 4 pages.

Selection process

The selection process is curated. The selection process includes reviews by the demos and installations program committee and will take into account feasibility, available space at the conference, and other relevant information. Our intention is to ensure that the track is exciting while representing a range of projects being undertaken across diverse HCI and related communities.

Authors of accepted submissions will receive instructions on how to prepare and submit the publication-ready version, and details on the demonstrations and installations presentation and scheduling at the conference.

Technical setup at the conference

Accepted Demonstrations and installations will be presented during the conference in the demos and installations area.

The organisers can provide all demonstrations with a standard table, WiFi and electrical outlets. Additionally, presenters can request a screen, and speakers. Demonstrations setup is handled by the authors.

Installations technical requirements will be specified with the organisers and the authors can request assistance for setup.

Publication

Extended abstract will appear in the Proceedings of NordiCHI 2020, which will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Images and video materials will be published as source material in the ACM Digital Library. Authors of accepted work must present at the NordiCHI 2020 Conference, and register for the conference.
