Call for participation
NordiCHI 2020 welcomes proposals for workshops as spaces for debate and co-development of ideas and approaches related to the advancement of research and practice within the field of Human-Computer Interaction.
Workshops are based on participants’ active engagement and contribution. Participants prepare in advance to share perspectives, knowledge, and interest in the workshop theme. The outcomes of workshops include heightened sensitivity to new issues, joint publications and research programs and critical yet friendly feedback on emerging ideas. Often, they establish or solidify research networks and contribute to community building.
Successful workshop proposals for NordiCHI 2020 should make full use of the workshop format, avoiding conference-style paper presentations, and instead prioritise debate and joint action.
Novel formats for submissions and for activities are encouraged. Proposals that reach out to other disciplines and traditions, and to industry, art, activism, and other practices to advance constructive and critical discussions were welcomed. Successful proposals clearly explain the aim and relevance of the workshop, intended audience, planned activities, expected outcomes and impact for the intended community.
This said we invite proposals for workshops focusing on all themes related to the field of Human-Computer Interaction. In particular, we invite workshops focusing on the theme of the conference: Shaping Experiences, Shaping Society.
Workshops should aim to attract 10-25 participants, and run for around a full day, with scheduled morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. Workshops will run in parallel with courses as pre-conference activities on October 25 and 26.

Please note that ACM has recently modified its Publication Workflow and Article Templates for the submission and publication process (see https://www.acm.org/publications/taps/word-template-workflow). Authors must write and submit their papers using the single-column "Review Submission Format".
Please refer to the Instructions for Authors for detailed guidance on the selection of the correct templates, preparation of your manuscript for review and publishing the final version of your paper.
A workshop proposal should have the following parts:
Paper
The paper should be 3 to 4 pages in single-column format, including references. It should be self-contained and clearly provide a detailed workshop description including:
- Title of the workshop
- Names and affiliations of the facilitators
- An abstract describing the aims, objectives, benefits and significance of the proposed workshop
- A scheduled overview of planned activities
- A draft of the call for workshop participation
- The promotional strategy, detailing how the organisers plan to recruit and select participants
- Facilitator(s) background, provided as short biographical notes
Selection Process
The selection process is curated. Course selection will happen by the discretion of the Courses Chairs. Acceptance of proposals will be informed by factors such as:
- Clarity of intended learning outcomes
- Value for the participants
- Level of expected interest
- Impact and relevance to the NordiCHI’s broad audience
- Profile of the proponents
Technical setup at the conference
We can generally provide a projector, screen and speakers. Budget constraints make it unlikely that additional equipment can be provided. Additional technical requirements must be discussed with the chairs and the authors can request assistance for setup.
Additional conditions
Although accepted workshops will be announced through the NordiCHI 2020 website, workshop organisers must set and circulate a call for workshop participation through appropriate channels and establish a website for the workshop no later than June 8.
Please note that the period between the notification of acceptance and the required public announcement is short, so plan accordingly.
Workshop participants are selected by the organisers of the workshop, based on criteria set by the organisers. Typically, potential participants submit a position paper, stating their contribution, interest and expertise related to the workshop. NordiCHI 2020 encourages workshop organisers to experiment with submission formats.
The possible publication of workshop participants contributions is the sole decision and responsibility of the workshop organisers.
Workshops are run with at least 5 participants registered by the early bird registration deadline so proponents should be active in promoting the workshop to relevant audiences.
Publication
Extended abstracts will appear in the Proceedings of NordiCHI 2020, which will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Organizers of accepted workshops must register for the NordiCHI 2020 conference.
